I sometimes do participate in traditional facilitated drum circles, where everyone plays the beats assigned by a Drum Circle Facilitator. These type circles are many times limited to the group playing beats the facilitators choose. Some use simple beats, some favor more complex beats, while others use beats of a particular culture.
But, being a freestyle improvisational drummer, I much more enjoy the freestyle drum circle, where anyone may begin a beat, even a novice. Everyone else either mirrors the beat or plays a beat that complements that beat. Everyone contributes. Some of the best circles I've drummed at were started with very simple beats and then the circle of beats took on a life of their own. It was Awesome!!!
